Games #1 & 2 for 2008 - The BIGS & Puzzle Quest Jan. 26th, 2008 @ 11:45 am
2008 Game #1 The BIGS

well, i'm definitely missing not having a baseball game to watch nearly every day... so i turned to The Bigs. i'm generally not a big fan of sim-style sports games, preferring instead a more arcade-y feel. honestly the only sports games i've ever really played for any length of time are NBA Jam, Ken Griffey Jr Baseball, Virtua Tennis, and Top Spin Tennis... so you get the idea. Anyway, i played the Bigs down at Ricardo's on our pitstop to NYC last summer, and knew then i was going to be purchasing it... when i got a 360. Home Run Pinball was an absolute blast, and damn near worth price of admission alone. Then i got my 360... and it was 3 months (deep into the offseason) that i got The Bigs. and it consumed me. 925/1000g later, (only one achievement still missing... complete rookie challenge for the National League. obviously already done for American League. i'll give it a a little bit of work here and there to snag it), and i can pretty much say i demolished it. and i should probably be stepping it up to something other than "medium" difficulty, because when you get 30-some runs in a world series game.... yeah.

2008 Game #2 Puzzle Quest

One big reason i don't generally play RPGs is that they are a giant sinkhole of life, sucking away hours i could be doing any number of things... including play other games. i purchased Burnout Paradise on wednesday... (now saturday) and i have not played it. in fact, it's still sitting in the bag it was placed in at time of purchase. Puzzle Quest is the reason. i made the mistake of downloading this one on XBL about a week ago. do not purchase this game unless you want to spend 20-25 hours playing bejeweled. that being said, it certainly has a lot more depth and replayability than bejeweled. each color gem when broken adds to your mana reserve, allowing you to cast spells that do any number of things to the playfield or directly to your opponent. the level cap (level 50) kinda upset me, because at that point i could only purchase upgrades on my characters stats which are expectedly very expensive. but for the most part i found the game to be very entertaining if somewhat addicting/life consuming. difficulty level was spot on... nothing giving me too much trouble. every now and then an opponent would whomp me a few times until i figured out what his spells were doing and how i could prevent them. then comes Lord Bane, the final boss. what a piece of fucking horseshit. he has 175% the hit points of my maxed out and not really feasibly upgradable character, and resists at least 50% of my spells. after 45-60 minutes of attempting somehow to beat this asshole, i gave up and dropped the game to easy difficulty. 200/200g. i somehow feel cheap.

Rock Band part 2 Dec. 20th, 2007 @ 11:40 pm
so just wanted to throw a little post up here about rock band. yes i completed guitar on expert the day i started it, so i claimed to have "completed" the game. maybe that was premature. but now... i think i can say that i've pretty much demolished the game.

guitar completed on expert.

drums completed on easy and medium... two tiers in on hard, not sure if i can go further.

vocals completed on medium. haven't really tried hard... almost afraid to.

multiplayer "hall of fame inductee tour" completed with brian, with 1 million+ fans. (3.6 million to be exact, as of this post)

all online achievements completed. tug of war and score duel win streaks in ranked matches, along with 20 total wins in each, AND the riding on coattails achievement.

to date, every available download pack/song has been downloaded and completed on expert on guitar, and many completed on medium on drums.

i think brian and i will still play to get the "big in ...." achievements, but not much else to do in the game. until more DLC arrives...

2007 game #14 - Marvel Ultimate Alliance (xb360) Dec. 18th, 2007 @ 03:40 pm
continuing on with the hack and slash 2007... i pretty much demolished MUA. it's just what i expected, having played the x-men legends series previously. i even started and intend to complete hard mode (yes, there's an achievement for it). started playing some online with ricardo as well... the level end meta game can get some good competition going. all in all, some good mindless fun.

also, i beat my established goal of completing 12 "current" games in this calendar year. wonder if i can do it again in 2008.

2007 Game #13 - Guitar Hero 3 Dec. 1st, 2007 @ 11:05 am
well, the other day when i got to Lou on expert and declared him impossible... i mighta been a little premature.

Lou was actually pretty easy, all it took was one attack in the right spot. what i'm pissed about though, unlike in guitar hero 2, even though i've bought everything in the store, i don't have the achievement for it (need to unlock everything first... which means 5* every song on every difficulty). in GH2, it was buy everything that wasn't an unlock. dumb.

2007 game #12 - Portal Nov. 28th, 2007 @ 06:55 pm
i picked up a used copy of Orange Box a couple weeks ago and have been sitting on it... i wasn't too interested in half-life... i wanted to try out Portal. so on sunday, i did. and plowed through the first 18 levels in one sitting. played for about a half hour yesterday (half of level 19) and again today (second half of level 19), and finished it. i've got the advanced challenges to try out now, which i think i'll get around to, although i think i may take a break and check out marvel ultimate alliance now.

regardless, Portal was nothing short of amazing... the "portal" element of the game brought up all kinds of interesting gameplay and puzzle solving. the banter that GLaDOS provides is pretty much gauranteed to be entertaining, and the song that plays during the credits is priceless. some people complained that it was too short, but i think it was just right... any more and i probably would've started to lose interest. the 19th level was brutal.

not sure if i'll put time into any of the other games (although i do kind of want to try out team fortress...), but i think portal was worth price of admission alone.

file this under useless shit i don't need, but is awesome anyway Nov. 26th, 2007 @ 04:29 pm
guess it pays off to look for shit on craigslist in other states that you have friends that live in.

yes, it lights up, although its sort of hard to tell. took the above picture with flash. tried taking without flash and all i got was NINTENDO GAMECUBE in white and everything surrounding it black. all in all, it's pretty awesome. thanks tom.

2007 Game #11 - Rock Band Nov. 22nd, 2007 @ 11:14 pm
bought the game yesterday, unpacked it today and finished the game on solo tour guitar on expert. i count that as complete... also played for a couple hours with my cousins, since they were over for turkey day dinner. i completely blow at the drums, fail most songs on medium. the guitar hasn't given me any issues yet, except sometimes when i totally suck at a song i will blame it anyway.

and i suppose i could be counting guitar hero 3 as game #11 instead, and rock band as #12... since i did beat it on easy, medium, and hard... just can't seem to finish off Raining Blood and One on expert. and past that, i also recently demolished tetris evolution for the 360, 950/1000 achievement points. 1 acheivement left to unlok... still working on it (damn you cascade mode!). and i could count xbla version of worms as well, since i finished all 20 challenges in that.... and so on and so forth.

anyway... moral of story, the xb360 is awesome.
